Science degree at SCU
Some really good science lecturers who are very knowledgeable, engaging and care about the experience of their students – which is not what I could say for the new model and higher ups. The 6×6 model is terrible for retention and getting enough quality time in the field or with your lecturers (although when we do it’s great).
If you have one of those computer brains that can easily absorb and remember info and don’t mind speed dating with subjects, great, if not..the model tends to deliver burnout and very little retention. If you are a happy online student and don’t mind studying part time this model may also work for you. SCU has a history of cool degrees and passionate people from what I’ve seen and heard from others, but has gone downhill in recent years. The science lecturers I have had definitely inspired me to push through the hard times. Soil science, earth systems, envirochemistry and human ecology / ecological perspective learning was wicked – just wish I had had more time.
I don’t know if SCU is overwhelmingly worse compared to other uni’s, but it does feel like it’s fallen victim to the unholistic business mindset rather than the quality of learning like so many other institutions of today.. I hope that those managing the uni will regenerate the learning experience cause it could be great again.
